"A tool for simulation: SYNTHETIC TV", pp30 Imagina 1993
Armand Fellous directs the 3D Laboratory at the Institut
National de l'Audiovisuel and is technical director of
the EU283 project. He was previously lecturer in mathematics
at the Université Rene Descartes. His earlier research
focussed on the theory of fractals and stochastic processes
in general. He holds a Doctorate in Mathematics.
Abstract :
In the framework of the Eureka EU283 program, the 3D Laboratory
at the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel has developed a set of
technical devices and programs to ensure virtual camera control
by a real camera. In this manner, elements derived from real
footage can be coherently mixed with other elements generated
by 3D synthesis.
The same set of material and software means makes
it possible to film real actors in computer-generated settings, or
virtual actors in real settings, or any conceivable combination of
these two situations.
The initial aim of the EU283 program, which likewise calls on TDI
(France), Videotime (Italy), and Telson (Spain), was to exploit
computer generated settings for fiction. Nevertheless, the
extraordinary interest of the system for simulation in the
fields of architecture, civil engineering and industrial
design soon became apparent.
The presentation will describe the various questions encountered
during development of this system, and will present a few of its
applications.
